On its first appearance in 1891, Brahms’ Clarinet Quintet in B Minor was immediately recognised as a remarkable achievement, and a century later it still has the power to claim the hearts and minds of players and audiences alike. Widely regarded as Brahms’ supreme achievement in the field of chamber music, the Clarinet Quintet was inspired by Brahms' meeting with the clarinet virtuoso Richard Muhlfield. Prior to the meeting Brahms had retired from composition, but the influence of the virtuoso unleashed an outpouring of creativity, including the clarinet trio and two sonatas.
The six quartets Opus 64 were composed in 1790 for the violinist Johann Tost who had led the second violins in Haydn's orchestra at Esterhazy. They were first performed in London, with the great violinist and impresario, Salomon, leading the string quartet. Number 6 in Eb is a fine work, demonstrating a wide variety of styles, from the drama of the first movement to the witty brilliance of the finale.
