Haydn's Piano Trios are performed less often than his symphonies and string quartets. His early trios are actually piano sonatas with violin and cello accompaniment and that is how they are described on the title page. In later years he established the piano trio as a form for three equal players. In addition, he used his the trios as a vehicle for serious musical expression, paving the way for Beethoven, and then the Romantics. The Trio in A major was written around 1794. It is the first of the last set of Haydn's piano trios and a milestone in the genre with the strings emerging as equal partners to the piano.
Mendelssohn composed his D Minor Piano Trio in 1839. It is one of his finest chamber works, on a par with the Octet. A great ‘celebrity’ of his time, Mendelssohn’s several visits to Birmingham – playing the organ and the piano, and conducting his own works at three successive Triennial Musical Festivals – secured the city’s place on the international musical map. Of the works he composed especially for Birmingham, his oratorio Elijah remains the most well-known. The premier took place in 1846 at the then newly constructed Town Hall. A popular, as well as revered performer, on one occasion when he played the organ at the Town Hall, the audience “waved their handkerchiefs and flourished their hats”.
