Mozart completed some 26 string quartets in his lifetime, the first in 1770 at the age of fourteen, and the last in June 1790, the year before his death, when he wrote the first three quartets of a proposed set of six for King Friedrich Wilhelm II of Prussia.
Serenade for strings in G K.525 'Eine Kleine Nachtmusik' has become one of Mozart's best known works, but also one of the most enigmatic. We do not know how it came into existence, nor do we have any knowledge of its being performed. We know the work only in the version with four movements, but it originally had five: Mozart writes in his catalogue "Eine Kleine Nachtmusik consisting of an Allegro, Menuet, Romance and Finale". Who suppressed the first Menuet is unknown. It is a delightful work and an example of Mozart's supreme mastery.
String Quartet in B flat K.458 known as 'The Hunt' was completed on 9th November 1784, to be published in October the following year by Artarias, the fourth of the set of 'Haydn' Quartets, forming collectively as Opus X in the publisher's description. 'The Hunt' opens with a figure that suggests the sound of the huntsman's horn, followed by a shorter figure, which is the subject of imitation throughout the four instruments. The charming Minuet is followed by an eloquent slow movement, and a lively Finale.
