Friday 4th March 2011 : PIANO RECITAL - Soloist DINAH LEVINE
Sonata in F Major K.332 by MOZART (1756-1791)
Kreisleriana - Opus 16 by SCHUMANN (1810-1856)
Suite Pour le Piano by DEBUSSY (1862-1918)

The Sonata in F K 332 is one a group of three published in 1784 composed for the use of Mozart's pupils in Vienna. He no doubt published them with a view to widening their circulation in addition to cashing in on his own growing reputation as a pianist. This is a work of kaleidoscopic brilliance, particularly evident in the finale.
An interesting feature of the Adagio is the ornamentation added to the printed edition, which was overseen by Mozart himself -- therefore providing valuable clues as to how the composer expected his slower movements to be embellished in performance.

It took Robert Schumann only four days in April of 1838 to write Kreisleriana. In the score, Schumann dedicated the work to Chopin, but like many of his compositions, it is really a testament of his love for Clara Wieck.
Schumann wrote of Kreisleriana that "the title is understandable only to Germans. Kreisler is a figure created by E.T.A. Hoffmann ... an eccentric, wild and clever Kapellmeister."
Like the dual personalities of Kreisler, Schumann's Kreisleriana also seems to alternate between personalities. At times it is wild, eccentric and clever as Schumann described Kreisler. However, it is equally tender, lyrical and romantic at other times.

Debussy began his Suite “Pour le Piano” around 1896, completing it in 1903. It was during these years that he evolved a personal and highly individual style of writing for the piano. The Suite indicates how profoundly the composer was evolving; it is a thrilling work and yet still transitional. Debussy had yet to find his mature style.
