Friday 1st April 2011 : Works by BEETHOVEN (1770 - 1827) & BORODIN (1833 - 1877)
String Quartet in C Minor Op. 18 No. 4 by BEETHOVEN
String Quartet No. 2 in D ( including the celebrated Nocturne) by BORODIN

String Quartet in C Minor Op. 18 No. 4 - Beethoven left Bonn for Vienna in October 1792, to study with Haydn, although he always refused to be called Haydn's “pupil”. He said he had only “taken a few lessons from Haydn” - and that was all!
Nine years later in 1801 when the six Opus 18 Quartets were published, Beethoven appeared to the musical world as “moulded by Haydn's virile talent and the spirit of Mozart” but these quartets are all original, already revealing Beethoven's remarkable musical personality.
Between 1796 and 1800 Beethoven's deafness was increasing daily. He made every effort to conceal this from the world, yet it was during these years that he composed Opus 18, truly the first of the “splendid lies” which filled his life.

String Quartet No. 2 in D - It is astonishing that Borodin achieved such mastery in musical composition, not having attended any systematic course. Certainly he was a fine amateur cellist, and played in several chamber ensembles as a young man whilst studying chemistry and medicine. Although he had great talent for both music and science, he actually spent his entire professional life as a chemist and teacher at the St. Petersburg Medico- Surgical Academy, composing only in his spare time.
The well known and hastily written String Quartet No 2 in D, he dedicated to his wife as a twentieth anniversary gift in 1881. The romantic melody of the Nocturne has gained world wide recognition since its use in Kismet.
